A Grassroots Initiative Takes Shape
The Ghetto Rats Youth Group was established approximately three years ago, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a response to the alarming accumulation of plastic waste in their surroundings. Mohammed Ahmed, one of the group’s key officials, reflects on the motivation behind their formation: “We saw plastic waste piling up everywhere, clogging drains and polluting our environment. We knew we had to do something about it.”
This grassroots initiative focuses on collecting plastic waste from Kibera’s streets and selling it to recycling companies, thereby addressing the dual issues of pollution and economic hardship.
Community Engagement and Empowerment
Rashebah Nduta, the group’s coordinator and communication lead, emphasizes the importance of community collaboration in their mission. “We work closely with the Nyumba Kumi initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and proper waste management,” she explains. “By empowering the community and providing capacity building, we can create lasting change.” This approach not only fosters a sense of ownership among community members but also encourages sustainable practices.

Osman Bilal, the group’s mobilizer, outlines some of the hurdles they face: “We struggle with a lack of finances to obtain the necessary licenses for our activities and insufficient storage space for the collected plastics.” Yet, their resilience shines through, as they remain committed to their mission despite these obstacles.
