In Malawi, Kasungu District, Hope Mandala, Managing Director of Futuristic Hope Action, leads an innovative initiative that combines environmental conservation with economic empowerment.
His journey highlights how communities can harness grassroots efforts to foster resilience and adapt to environmental challenges.
Transforming Vision into Action
Hope’s journey began in 2022 when he decided to create a project that would address environmental issues while providing sustainable livelihoods for his community. He established a beekeeping initiative in Mponda Village with a clear goal: to empower local youth and women with skills in honey production. With just five modern beehives to start, the project quickly gained momentum, thanks to support from Kenyan partners who contributed essential materials to improve hive quality.

With just five modern beehives to start, the project quickly gained momentum, thanks to support from Kenyan partners who contributed essential materials to improve hive quality.
Beekeeping for Environmental and Economic Impact
This beekeeping initiative goes beyond honey production. It’s part of a larger effort to restore local ecosystems and offer alternative income sources for marginalized groups. “We’re committed to enhancing biodiversity and creating economic opportunities, especially for women and young people,” Hope explains. By focusing on these two goals, the project addresses both environmental degradation and poverty in the area.
The initiative also involves establishing nurseries for fruit and indigenous trees, helping to combat deforestation. These reforestation efforts are essential for restoring the health of the local ecosystem, which is facing significant environmental pressures.
Facing Challenges and Building Community Resilience
The project has encountered some obstacles along the way, primarily in securing resources for expansion, such as materials for additional beehives.
Community resistance initially posed challenges, but Hope has worked to build trust and engagement through ongoing dialogue and partnerships. Now, he is seeking additional support to grow the project further and extend its benefits to more families.
Building Sustainable Livelihoods
Despite these challenges, the initiative is already yielding positive results. “Our first honey harvest produced five liters, and the second brought in 12 liters,” Hope shares. The revenue from honey sales has allowed the project to reinvest in itself, making it possible for more community members to participate and benefit from a steady income.
Looking Toward the Future
Hope envisions a future where local ecosystems are revitalized, and communities are thriving through sustainable livelihoods. He plans to expand the beekeeping initiative, establish more hives, and continue educating the community on conservation practices. His vision is rooted in a commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment.
Inspired by his time at the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice, Hope has dedicated himself to creating positive change. Through his beekeeping and reforestation efforts, he is building a sustainable future for his community, showing how local actions can drive broader impacts.
